Focused search
Find practitioners whose experience and practice may align with the needs of a particular matter.
A better professional search
Best Pro Search is building a better way to discover and compare registered U.S. patent practitioners, patent agents, and patent attorneys based on the needs of a particular matter.
Why now?
Effective July 20, 2026, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office requires patent applicants and patent owners whose domicile is outside the United States or its territories to be represented by a registered patent practitioner in good standing before the Office.
Many inventors who previously handled parts of the patent process themselves must therefore identify suitable representation. Best Pro Search is being developed to make that search more transparent, practical, and informed.
Best Pro Search is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Find practitioners whose experience and practice may align with the needs of a particular matter.
Use public professional information presented clearly enough to support an informed decision.
Rankings should be explainable and should not be determined by who pays the most.
The service is being designed to avoid collecting more personal information than the search requires.
Created from firsthand need
Best Pro Search began with a practical problem. Its creator has drafted and prosecuted U.S. patent applications without representation while living abroad. The new USPTO rule now makes registered representation necessary—and highlights how difficult it can be to find the right practitioner for a narrowly defined need.
Looking ahead
The underlying search and recommendation approach is being designed to support specialized searches across other regulated professions in the future.
